Sunday Driving…

Finally, another weekend jaunt out west to see what’s happening on the beach front.  No sleep in on Sunday so I could hopefully capture a few shots before the harsh conditions of the sun set in over Piha and Karekare.  While the sea was its usual white-capped mayhem, there really wasn’t a lot of action going on the top of the waves; no surfers, no swimmers, nothing…until the black sands of Piha filled with the colours of the surf life-saving Nippers doing their training, racing down the beach, getting their paddle boards ready to race out and practise on the waves, parents supporting the group.  After a gentle climb up Lion Rock, and some opportunities to capture some fauna we headed down the windy road to Karekare, famous for being the setting for movies such as “The Piano” and being recognised as one of the best beaches in the world.  We were spoilt to find the beach relatively isolated…not so great when one is looking for some action to capture!  But hey, what a beautiful spot, vast open black sand, white capped surf, and stunning hillsides enveloping the vista.  All in all, another awesome trek out west, but now it’s time to head north.  Summer is in, holidays are beginning, NZ is ready to play…
